Exploring Ibiza

09:00

One thing, everyone should do when on Ibiza - or any other Mediterranean island for that matter - rent a scooter and ride over the island! You can explore so many things. The little villages, beautiful beaches and delightful domestic restaurants.

We asked at the hotel reception for a local rental service. This really did save us a few Euros. On the Internet, we didn't find a scooter for less than 60€ a day. In the end, we paid 43€ for the entire day including insurance.

Neither of us has ever sat on a scooter before. Thankfully, my companion is a little more dauntless than me. He was my chauffeur for the rest of the day. I only sat on the back of the scooter and cling to him. After the first kilometre I forgot to be afraid and really enjoyed myself and the island!

We started at our Hotel near Santa Eulalia. Our first stop was the beautiful little Sant Lorenc de Balafia. We are still not absolutely sure if we actually found the village or not. We only saw a few houses, one restaurant and this absolutely gorgeous church!

By the time we arrived the sun was glazing and all the white bricks were reflecting the bright sunlight. Absolutely pretty. We didn't go inside the church. I was wearing as you can see shorts and felt it just wasn't appropriate to go in there. But we had a wonderful view from behind the church onto the surrounding valleys. In may everything is beautifully green and many flowers are in full bloom. That is why we took at least ten minutes to just savour it.

The church was built in the 18th century and the layout is a cross. Right next to the church is the start of a hiking trail. Even if you don't like hiking you can just walk a few minutes and get to a lovely barbecue spot or a playground for kids.

We tried to find the village of Balafia, which is famous for its well reserved defence towers, from the time when the town had to fight off pirates. But unfortunately we weren't lucky.

So we continued to the amazing village of San Joan de Labritja. This scenic little village was my favourite village on Ibiza. The town in the middle of the hills on the northern end of Ibiza has everything a village needs. It might not be of historic importance for the island, but has charmed me.

Around narrow alleys, there are old men and women sitting outside in the shade, waiting for lunchtime. Around the town are several picturesque little restaurants. If you want to eat typical food, you definitely should try one of them!

Once a week the little village turns into the touristic hot spot on the island. The Sant Joan Hippy Market is famous for its handmade souvenirs. It doesn't overflow with "Made in China" junk goods.

After exploring the town we hopped back onto our scooter to explore the far north of the island. Our views on the way to Portinax were beyond amazing! Here and there we just stopped on the side of the street to have a look and maybe snap one or two pictures.

The streets are quite steep and narrow. It is a lot of fun driving in this area! Especially in a convertible or, like us on the back of a scooter. Breathtaking!

The town of Portinax isn't that great. We only drove there, because we wanted to see the lighthouse. We were able to see its light at night from our hotel room. Unfortunately, you cannot drive there, but have to walk for 30 minutes at least.

That's why we decided to continue our way to our next and final destination. We knew it would be a long ride. And so we sped over on hour over the island through many tiny villages. We were rewarded with this:

Cala Salada was a tip we got from one of the employees of our hotel.

The water has the most amazing shades of blue and turquoise. The rocks are in the typical reddish colour, that the earth, often has on Ibiza.

The way to the beautiful part of the beach is a little bit adventures though.

You can either take the long way, which we did when we arrived. You might not want to wear flip flops though. It only takes a few minutes. And you will be compensated with views like this:

If you choose the direct way over the cliffs be prepared for this:

You really need a little climbing skill. If you have kids or a lot to carry along. Don't go this way. We saw several people turn around and head the other way. The stones are a little slippery here and there. So watch where you are going!

If you take this way you can really feel as if you are an explorer. It is a lot of fun, and yes up on the rock in front of me on ↑ this picture is where we went. It's the easiest way. The effort really is worth the while though.

You can spend hours just relaxing on the beach. Even though the way to this beach makes you think it would be empty. It is not. There are quite a lot of people here. But also a cocktail maker. He or she will prepare the most amazing drinks for you. But only if you don't have to drive back home.

We eventually had to leave and drive back. Another wonderful day in paradise.

This was a really special day. I love to look back on it. Hope you enjoyed the ride too!

LOVE
KAspiration
